I’ve been working in finance for 10 years, but recently all I think about is baking cakes. I dream of tasty cakes all day and night! It sounds crazy, but I want to quit my job for this. I’m 33 years old, not a kid! At the same time, I’m very unhappy. What should I do?
Hey Mr. Not-a-kid-any-more,
Wow! You’re going from a suit and tie to a chef’s hat. What a huge change... and change can be very scary! You obviously don’t want to make silly decisions, but you do want to make heartfelt decisions and be happy, right?
Answer the following 3 questions and it will help you to clear your mind and start moving.
How will you feel when you are a baker? Happy? A sense of achievement? Recognition? Or something else? How strongly do you feel that (this feeling is called core value)? To move forward, you need strong emotional motivation and without it, you might stop when you hit obstacles.
2. WHAT is holding you back?
If being a baker is your true passion, what’s holding you back then? Fear of failure? Fear of what people think of you? Fear of losing stability? Or some other things? Ask yourself what makes you worried and write them down. Look at the list and examine them one by one “Is that true”? You will find most of what you worried about comes from your imagination. For the rest, ask yourself the next question:
3. WHAT can you do NOW?
What is the ONE THING you can do NOW to get yourself unstuck? If you need to learn baking, sign up for a course now! If you need advice from an experienced baker, go find one to talk to. Keep the steps super small, super simple and DO IT NOW!
As you said, you are not kid any more. And yet, kids are so happy! Why? Because they have no fear, and believe they can achieve whatever they dream about.
Take full responsibility for your life like an adult, act as bravely as a fearless kid, and you will move toward the direction you want!
