I'm at the end of my rope with work and stress! I work too much overtime and I'm now completely exhausted. My clients have unreasonable demands, and my job is to meet their expectations. I feel bad if I refuse or say "no." What should I do?
Saying 'yes' to everything is like running on a treadmill that doesn't stop, it's overwhelming, exhausting and pointless! How do you stop? Here are 3 steps to help you jump off the YES treadmill so you start living your life again!
Step 1: Why can’t you say NO
Ask yourself what’s holding you back from saying NO? The reason might be that you don’t like conflicts or perhaps you are afraid of being rejected by others if you say NO.
Perhaps you want to be accepted by everyone so you're afraid of losing your inner peace or affecting your relationship with others. Find the hidden reasons behind your hard-to-say-no behavior; and address your fear first instead of your behavior.
Step 2: Set your boundaries
Imagine, if there were no hard feelings or negative consequences, who and what would you say no to? Decide what is absolutely unacceptable to you! Make a list and - practice - saying NO!
Step 3: How to say NO
Sometimes it’s very uncomfortable to say NO, especially for those who are relationship oriented and have gotten used to always saying yes. Like any habit, it’s all about PRACTICE.
Be polite but honest. Don’t over-explain or defend yourself, just give a simple and firm answer. When you are confident and comfortable saying no, people will start to understand and respect your decision!
Saying NO requires a deep understanding of your true needs. Have you taken time to take a look at yourself? It takes courage to face your own fear. And once you say NO to others, you are really saying YES to yourself.
